The Pullouts
Unbeknownst to most of the English speaking world, The Pullouts are the "real deal" rock band that just might
save rock and roll. These 4 post punk rockers hail from Roanoke, VA - the Star City of the South. It's the kind
of place that could pass for anytown USA until you look up and see the brightly lit electric star posted on
Mill Mountain. It's inspired artists and photographers alike, but in this case, it has brought down the power
of rock and distilled it in southern gentleman swagger.
Before forming in 2006, the members were all friends and members of various musical endeavors in the Roanoke
area. After leaving his previous band and playing covers with drummer Josh Zimmerman, singer Bubba J Webster
started working on new songs and a new band. The two of them rehearsed and wrote songs for 6 months before
finding lead guitarist Quinn Chalkley was available. When Bubba asked longtime soundman "Diesel" to come to
rehearsals he became an unofficial 4th member of the band. Eventually, "Diesel" would take over the roll of
bassist, allowing Bubba to play his songs on guitar for the first time in his life. "It was like a switch
got flipped in my brain..." says Webster. "I had played the songs on bass for so long, I almost forgot the
subtle intricacies in the melodic structures of our music." "I am much inspired, and ready to tackle a new
record...too bad this one's not even released yet!!!"
The Pullouts have recorded their debut LP for much of 2008. To be released on April 4th, it is called
"Negotiating the Pop". The album will feature 15 songs of varied texture from punk to funk, rock to folk,
ska to jazz...coming to a climax with the closing tune "What Is Magnus?" written by Zimmerman and Webster
during their initial 6 mth sessions. "It's definitely the most dynamic thing on the record" muses Webster,
"Josh really wrote a killer song on the piano, and I just added the lyrics and bassline". The song will
likely be a late single released off of "Negotiating the Pop" The first single which is available now
at www.reverbnation.com/thepullouts is called "The Future Is In Sleaze" and features soaring guitar
work from Chalkley and witty lyrics from Webster about what people dream about when they have no money.
There is also a viral video for that song in the works for the near future.
The album is being ENTIRELY self produced under the WOMP/RockFormRadio label. Not an easy feat for working
class schmoes. Thanks to their drive to make tongue-in-cheek rock music, the brought forth fire from stone
in the name of rock and roll.
The only thing more exciting about this band than it's music is it's live show. Since show #1, the band has
played 80% original material with a healthy smattering of cheeky covers to rouse the fringe listener.
The few covers oddly flow seamlessly with the sarcastic rockitude of their show. You never know if all
members will be wearing pants by the end of the show,
as evidenced in 2007 at a charity event when Webster stepped out of his jeans and played the rest of the show
in his "American Dad" boxer shorts (much to the chagrin of the fashion police).
These guys work for a living, have families and still rock your face off at every opportunity. The Roanoke,
VA scene has many working class heroes...these guys just might get everyone to look.
